Jeff,

Take a look at those beautiful BMW bikes and do yourself a big favour: buy one. The new 850 is very nice and only CAD$9000 which is a screaming deal compared to Hondas and other Japanese brands.

I might buy one myself.

There really is nothing to debate. If it is taken from the wreckage and not reported, it is theft.

Chances are that even if the proper forms are filled out by the "finders", the insurance companies would not come after the goods. This is because the benefits of declaring the items a total loss would outweigh the cost involved in recovering each of the items, surveying the damage to the items, and reselling the items. Thus, if they follow procedure, they would likely be able to keep the items legally.

However, we cannot forget that the ship was loaded with non-commercial items as well. Undoubtedly there were many, many people who where shipping personal items, mail, packages, household goods, irreplaceable heirlooms, etc. I'm sure the people would like their things returned to them.

I saw the story on the BBC RSS feed and was about to read it. Your post saved me the trouble.

There's plenty of debate about it here I've since discovered:
