Killer Cars

Filed under: Motorcycles, Korea — Jeff in Korea at 12:00 pm on Friday, September 8, 2006

Last night as I was riding through town and trying various options for making videos, I very nearly filmed my own death.

The most common motorcycle accident is someone turning left, legally or illegally, across the path of the motorcycle. That is exactly what happened to me last night.

Here are a few screen captures from my video:

I was moving along at a pretty fast speed when suddenly a car began making an illegal U-turn directly in front of me. Notice he is starting to cross the center lineonly a few yards in front of me.

As he continues to intrude into my line, I react by moving right as quickly as possible.

He paused just long enough for me to manage to move far enough to the right to scream past him as he continued to make his illegal turn.

This guy definitely would have gotten a golf ball in his windshield if I had not left it in my office.

They drive like they walk. Did you get the I-almost-killed-you-sorry-about-that hand wave?

ha ha.. I don’t know what I got. I just keep roaring down the road, a little shaken and happy to be alive. I didn’t look for a hand wave or a blink of the emergency flashers.

Haha, Allen. Isn’t that wave perfect? I got it a couple of weeks ago when some young lady in a Matiz cut across two lanes of traffic in half a second right in front of my motorcycle.

I figure it’s rooted in the Confucian interpretation of 理, where justice finds its place considering the patterns of heaven and earth and fault is necessarily split between the two parties in varying degrees. Whereas attempted manslaughter means one-way blame and imprisonment in backward Western courts; a hand wave can balance the scales of justice and make the world right again. 5000 years of culture, dude. Those mandatory primary education classes in “Ethics” are paying off.

One problem. Golf balls have a hell of a ricochet. They will hit you twice as hard as you threw them. I’ve been sizing up paint ball guns.
