Referee Blues - Audio Blog

Filed under: silliness, Audioblogs, Korea — Jeff in Korea at 12:40 am on Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Late last night I was reading Korean news. Story after story after story was about the World Cup and how Korea was unfairly ousted from the tournament because of a perceived bad call by a referee. The more I read about alleged errors, conspiracies, charges of bribery, etc., something inside of me snapped and the words began to flow, and within minutes I had the first and ony draft of the “Referee Blues”.

While this is certainly no comparison to the “F***ing USA” song that some Koreans produced following an incident of perceived injustice and incorrect officiating during the 2002 Olympics, it is my own little tribute to the 2006 World Cup.

Lyrics:

Hey there, referee. How can it be
You penalize Team Korea
No one else gets penalties?
That bad man. That cruel referee.

The Koreans told the referee
Please call the Swiss offsides.
We need this offsides badly.
‘Cuz we waited all our lives.
That bad man. That cruel referee.

What care I ’bout you babies
or the training all your life?
You and your coach Advocaat
Can’t seem to place blame right.
That bad man. That cruel referee.

Dae Han Min Gook
What that offsides flag for?
I didn’t hear no whistle blowing,
But the Koreans don’t play no more.
That bad man. That cruel referee.

Netizens all in a fury.
What you think about that?
We got 40,000,000 people
who want a piece of you.
That bad man. That cruel referee.

He stood there on the sideline
His head held way up high.
The Koreans all want to kill him.
They’d be glad to see him die.
That bad man. That cruel referee.

Jeff, I think you should have been a folk singer, rather than choosing to be a lawyer. I hope we will here more like this.

Well, Matt… While I appreciate the sentiment, whether or not it was sarcastic, I think I’ll keep my day job.

Hey Jeff, I suggest writing some nice stories on Korea before Kushibo gets you.

There is a typo up there, “here” should be “hear”, and to make it clear, I was not being sarcastic. Compared with foul “folk music” like ‘F*cking USA’, yours is an example of polite communication of ideas.

Well. I’m the last one to point out people’s typos. Mainly because my blogging philosphy is write, post, then fix my mistakes later…If I ever catch them.

All in all, it’s not too bad for a project that took just under an hour from inception to recording…especially a project done entirely on a whim in the middle of the night. Had I cared enough to make it a professional job, it would have sounded better. But, I dont.

For what it’s worth, there may be more of that sort of thing. It was kind of fun.

Great little ditty. Loved it! Dittoing with Matt, hope to hear more acoustic tunes on the site.

First time here, by the way. Got led by a link to your “whining begin” page, which I really liked. I’ve been aware of the Korean inferiority complex, so wasn’t surprised at the outrage that resulted. Seriously, it does nothing for them or their image, if they’re concerned about “face” and all that.

Great site. Will bookmark this page.

You do have to admit that anger has subsided pretty quickly - as you can see how people are telling the players “well-done. You did great.” I don’t think the “whining” was that bad - there was no massive outrage.

Also Genjuro, what “inferiority complex” are you talking about? Do you even know the definition and symptoms of inferiority complex? I don’t think so. If your definition of “inferiority complex” is that simplified, then I can simply characterize Japan as “ass-kissing, kinky stuff loving, two-faced nation” and I can also characterize China as “boorish, overpopulating, smelly, nation with people with seriously bad teeth.”
