Americano Coffee With a Double-Shot of Racism to Go Please

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jeff in Korea at 10:55 am on Tuesday, December 13, 2005

It is 10:00am and the day already has the markings of one of those days that you really wish would never have happened in the first place.

Upon arrival at my office, I walked to the corner convenience store to get something for breakfast.  I arrived at the store and while pondering what to get, I had a sudden urge to get a tuna triangle kimbab (Sort of a triangle version of a sushi roll).

There were 5 middle-aged to old men standing next to the cooler where the kimbab is kept. I walked over and got what I was looking for. As I started to walk away, I head that all-to-common work, "미국놈" (Migook-nom).  Migook is "America," but "nom" is a tricky word to translate.  "Nom" is a word used to indicate animals or objects.  When talking about people, it can mean anything from a casual reference, such as "guy", to something more offensives, such as "bastard."  From context and vocal inflection, the term is most often used in the "bastard" sense of the word.  In any case, it is always a derogatory term.

Hearing "Migook-nom", my ears perked up to hear one of the older men say in a very snide tone, "These American bastards think they are developing tastes similar to ours. Ha Ha Ha. He passed up the sandwich and took the kimbab." (much giggling from all of the men).

As the store clerk has become somewhat of a good acquaintance, I didn’t feel like causing a scene.  So, instead of being confrontational, I turned to shoot the speaker one of my "you pathetic idiot" stares.  It was at that point I realized they were standing near the cooler because they were using the hot water dispenser to get hot water for their cups of instant Starbucks coffee.  Ah… Ignorance and unnoticed irony…  The speaker had actually said, "These American bastards think they are developing tastes similar to ours," while holding a small cup of Starbucks Cafe Americano in his hand.

Ugh!

Oh, you should have explained it to you. None of them would ever be able to drink another cup of coffee without thinking it. Poetic justice, it would have been.

After hearing a few too many of “Korea invented this” or “Korea invented that,” I almost convinced a couple of Koreans that Americans invented “spoons” and “soup.” Of course it was absurd, but I talked a good talk. In the end I can never keep a straight face, though.

Jeffrey,

Here is the dilemma when giving a Korean the “withering stare”.

The average Korean in ass-hole mode thrives on it.

Many times a Korean will engage in a staring contest with you … determined not to lose. It’s like feeding a retarded vampire human blood… or an alien-space creature that thrives on draining life-giving energy from human anger. The Korean derives his sense of being, his experience of his own existence, and his self-worth from such actions as you have described… it feels good. He sucks others — even foreigners — for his self-esteem to obtain adulation, attention, reflection, fear, feelings of superiority.

Yes, folks … EVERY Korean does this. It’s a cultural thang.

A “withering stare” merely stokes his furnace… and makes him feel —ALIVE! There is nothing sadder than the routine feelings of numbness and worthlessness a Korean must live without obtaining these daily injectins of self-esteem. Absent any attention - the Korean disintegrates and self-annihilates. When unnoticed, he feels empty and worthless. Never allow a Korean to feel un-noticed… or, they become unstable and dangerous… and will resort to kicking-the-dog in order to obtain relief: the reason why dogs in Korea are neurotic…why Kim Jung Il wants nukes … why Korean wives have black eyes… why Koreans chop off their fingers, or surgically excise their penises for transexual fame.

Every Korean will, therefore, usually keep his xenophobic remarks to himself when alone, absent his buddies — since their is no emotional profit. But, when he is with his homeboys … his contemptuous remarks toward a foreigner is sure to be affirmed, and therefore, he feels like a champ. This is truly the “dynamite” … behind “Dynamic Korea”.

Conclusion: you must “understand” Koreans… give them what they need… love them, treat them with respect since they are humans with the same needs like the rest of us: if you do this, they will be sure to abuse you more… since they consider such actions a sign of weakness … ripe for exploitation.

Everything I have said above is true, and found in a government report written by Korean scientists from the FAN DEATH RESEARCH INSTITUTE.

C’mon, let’s give credit where credit is due.

Everyone knows Korean scientists invented Oxygen.

Of course, they won’t show you their research and their results have yet to be replicated by scientists from any other nation, [because western scientists don’t eat with chopsticks] but you just have to take them at their word.

It’s kind of like religion. If you just have enough faith, everything begins to make sense.

Kimchi protects you from AIDS and SARS, cloned dogs and embryonic stem cells are just flying out of Seoul science labs left and right, the entire world is tripping over itself to get DVD copies of the latest Korean soap operas, the national soccer team is ready to take the World Cup free and clear this time around [without any help from the refs], and “ice cream” is a native Korean word later borrowed by English speaking nations.

Just close your eyes and believe.

OFFFFFFF TOPPPPPIC ALERTTTTTT

JEFF, what’s up with the lack of activity on the Blues blog, man?

C’mon. Gimme something to read. I keep going back to the Little Milton photo you posted and drooling over that ES-345 he’s playing, but I need something new.

You know, of course, that Koreans invented the blues. It was a dark and stormy night and a group of lab specilists at SNU had just finished up inventing cloned canines and embryonic stem cells using nothing but a pair of metal chopsticks and a head of bok choy, when someone picked up a guitar [a Cort, of course, not a Gibson] and started playing a 12-bar rhythm along a I-IV-V progression, again using his metal chopsticks as a slide. Some sort of adapted open G tuning, no doubt.

The rest, as you know, is history. Some cat named B.B. King stole the idea from the scientist [now serving as a KATUSA] while serving in the Army during the Korean War and made it popular in the US, then some crazy Brit named Eric [with a loyal following who thought he was God], stole the idea from B.B. so the original Korean connection was lost and now Koreans get no credit at all for yet another innovation they gave the world.

I tell you, it’s the “Shrimp Among Whales” Blues.

Comment by korea bashing site to justify its own inherent bias and racism

great site. please cry me river….boo hoo….you realize the ‘racism’ you experience here is nothing compared to what minorities experience in the USA, Europe and Canada? All my life I’ve gotten comments like, ” If you don’t like America, then get the hell out.” Most expats live in Korea for like 2 years and they think and act like the enitre nation should bow down to their every whim. They also mistakenly think that Koreans do not know about what they publish on these blogs when they say things that border on racism like, “ALL Koreans are like this….” Some of you, let’s face it are hypocritical two-faced @ssholes. You act all nice to the natives in Korea but put out your racist drivel with no shame here on the internet. It’s one thing to criticise Korea/koreans but its an enitire different ballgame when you start to spew out comments like:

“The average Korean in ass-hole mode thrives on it.

And you would proabably wouldn’t give a crap but let’s just say that whenever I go to Korea, I’m gonna keep these blogs and you blokes/expats in mind….and natives will be forewarned. And if you don’t like Korea…”Then get the HELL out”

-nom is almost always pejorative.

EXAMPLE…..DOH-DUK-NOM (often referring to
politicians.)

– Korea is a pretty racist society,
but so is everybody else in the world.

Whoa there, time out.

Take two lithium, a healthy dose of reality, and two teaspoons of “shut-the-hell-up-while-the-adults-are-trying-to-talk”.

Have a nice day.

Ok guys, we all know that the world is full of hate for those that are different from the ones that are hating on. Koreans hate very well along w/ everyone else. The difference is that we see it in our faces but the average Korean thinks he is to slick to get caught. Like people from outside the ROK is not able to learn the language? I grew up in this country and am half Korean so everyone out there who is trying to say that Koreans are not like the way people here are describing is half wrong. Korean women seem to have a balance but when a bunch of Korean males start talking, I just walk away because I know something stupid is coming out of their mouths. AGAIN, this is pretty much the same everywhere you go.

Take this small example of the ingorance of the Korean people: 1988 Olympics, Taegu. Soccer match agains the power house USSR and the USofA. Prior in 1983, the USSR shoots down KAL flight 007 killing everyone on board. Prior in 1950~1953 the US along w/ many other nations join the fight in Korea and many die there. So, to recap –> USA tried and did help, the USSR wanted to shoot down KAL 007 and did. So, I thought we would have a good cheering section at the stadium. HOW STUPID WAS I? There was one tiny section cheering for the US (all Americans of course) and the entire stadium either waving their own flag (who wasn’t even playing) or the USSR flag. I gotta tell you what, for a little kid to see that…you don’t ever forget. A few months ago, they want to tear down the statue of McCarthur? They want to side w/ the Chinese (who push 100,000 soliders during the Korean war to drag it on)? They treat the Philipino people the way the Japanese treated them? Have protesters everywhere yelling for Yankees to go home but to make sure they don’t ruin their Kobe Bryant Jersey, Nikes and their pair of Levi’s. Now we have Koreans in the states bitching about how they have to go through racism? I don’t think people get denied access to resturants and bars in the states if they are Koreans do they? I sure as hell get denied access to resturants and bars because I am a Yankee. The funny thing is, the minute you start to yell at them in Korean, they want to give you the best seat in the house. Gimme a freakin break! What does the ramble of crap mean? KOreans are racist as hell and they think that they are the chosen one. I would think so too if I got conquered and destroyed 100000 times in the last 5000 years.

And I thought the post was good… the comments are even better. Being a Chinese-American in the States, I’ve noticed a lot of what has been said in this blog and in the comments regarding even Koreans in America. That being said, you’ll notice that Koreans in the states have very few friends that are not Korean. It’s sad that Koreans are so hostile to other races and think they are the supreme… the Starbucks Irony is the best.
