No matter how it gets it. If it can get that attention through hosting the Olympics or World Cup, then fine, but they're willing to do/suffer/complain about just about anything to get that attention. Anything to have pictures of Seoul on the front page of the NYT or IHT. It's like a nation jumping up and down waving its arms shouting: "Hey, don't ignore me! Yo, over here! Pay attention!" I admit to having been wrong about Korea before, but yeah, I have the same cynical feelings you have described. I think anyone who has lived here more than 6 months is probably the same way.
