Super Roadblock

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jeff in Korea at 1:40 pm on Thursday, October 7, 2004

I have written before about the phenomenon of Korean girl roadblocks. Although it was a somewhat tongue-in-cheek commentary on three or four girls moving slowly down the sidewalk in some form of beskirted rolling roadblock, THIS is completely unacceptable:

SEVEN people (Yes, the guy on the right is part of the road block) shambling down the sidewalk during my lunch hour today.

Funny. Must be a Busan thing because there’s no way it could happen in Seoul. 5 is the most I’ve ever seen! Completely unacceptable.

Question: If you push them, do they fall like dominos?

add to that their uncanny ability to stop and bottleneck at the most inconvenient places and their entrances are Krammer-like (Seinfeld), Krammeristic?

Nomad,

J. M. Barrie said, “God gave us our memories so that we might have roses in December.”
I say, “Man gave us cameras so that we might have skirts in Winter.”

Jeff - Is the Korean RoadBlock™ somehow related (somehow) to Korean insecurity?

I’m not being snarky with the question, I really want to know. Koreans (overall) seem a pretty insecure bunch of people. And taking up the whole sidewalk in a crowded city seems a pretty silly way to make up for this trait.

I think it is more about not giving a crap about anyone but yourself. These are the same people that when they are alone will drift aimlessly from one side of the sidewalk to the other without caring who is trying to pass. These are the same people that for no discernable reason will stop on a dime and make an instantaneous 180 degree turn without realizing that there are 1,000 people directly behind them walking at full speed. In my opinion, it is simply a “no one else but me exists.” self-inflicted Jedi mind trick.

The “Roadblock” is related to not remotely giving a damn about anybody outside your immediate group.

NYC vs. Seoul

This letter in today’s Salon reminds me of Seoul:This reminds me of an interesting paradox I’ve often noticed. Living and working in New York City people so quickly develop such a high level of engagement that rules regarding behavior on roads, sidew
