I'm surprised by your comment. If 'leaving your leadership post early' is a problem, what is doing everything short of crimnal activity to avoid real military service? Once again, as a Canadian, all of this American jingoism about military service sickens me. But as a person who has served in the army, I am horiffied by the way some Republicans treat the institution of military honors.

"are you referring to the decortated war veteran or the awol chicken hawk?"
Dan was referring to the self-decorated war veteran.

Kerry sure wants to be the President pretty bad for a guy who did everything in his power to leave his leadership post in Vietnam early.

As a Canadian, all this convention crap seems like American jingoism to me. As a person, I was as overwhelmed as you by the DNC. There's not a lot that Americans can do and have everyone come out feeling great, but political conventions are one of them.

Angus,

Projecting your party's faults upon others again? The only ones who wore masks were the Democrats, but the Democrats did put their whackjobs on display starting with Michael Moore.

Care to answer why should America elect a man who gave aid and comfort to the enemy in times of war? A man that would allow Iran to keep its programs to make weapons grade fuel for nuclear bombs?

yeoldetoast

its called a bait and switch tactic. the republicans are putting up their rational moderates -john mc., rudy g., arnold- for prime time coverage and keep the wack jobs -anti-abortion activists, gun nuts, assorted christian mullahs- under wraps who would scare the shit out of swing voters. think pat buchannan in '92 calling for a culture war against all manner of queers and liberals. it may warm the heart of the true believers, but its electoral suicide and karl rove knows it. if bush wins again this will be the last you see of these guys and their politically suspect views.

YeOldeToaste -- I'm curious, wasn't it the "kinder and gentler" liberal President William Jefferson Clinton who signed into law the odious and shameful Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)?

Like Clinton said: The Republicans are in town showing their once-in-four-years compassionate face.

Notice how they're dealing all their cards for moderates. Getting many speakers who are pro-choice and a few that are actually not anti-samesex marriage. These people do not represent the core of the Republican party.

I leave you with a quote from the Simpsons' School House Rock parody:

Boy: Why can't we just make a law against flag burning?

Cartoon Constitution: Because that law would be unconstitutional. But if we *changed* the constitution...

Boy: We could make all sorts of crazy laws!

CC: Now you're gettting it!

You know I never thought I would say this but I think I am starting to love DiaKorea's comments more than Gimbab. I never thought I could love anything more than Gimbab...

I watched the convention this morning too. Curiousity killed the cat. I watched the Democratic Convention too for the same stupid reason. I kept hoping I would see someone who has a soul or believes what he is saying. All both conventions have done so far is to give the the inner cynic in me a chance to yell at the television for a while. Rudy's speech while possibly "down to earth" and "emotionally jam packed" was far from a great oration. When he started telling the story about the construction worker I was like "T't't't'oday junior!" But then I'm a bastard...
