Hellboy

Saw Hellboy this evening! Great movie. Brilliant adaption of the Dark Horse Comic. Unfortunately as often happens in movies with sarcastic, non-physical, non-slapstick humor, I was the only one in the theater laughing at most of the humor.

Humor is just one of those things that is so hard to translate across languages and cultures. While several moments in the movie was laugh out loud funny to me, the Koreans in the audience laughed laughed exactly once…when a lone piece of broken glass fell oh Hellboy’s head a few moments after the rest of the window had fallen on him.

Even after 16 years, I don’t find much of Korean humor funny. I don’t see anything funny about the antics of the comedians in the “gag concerts.” I just stare at the TV dumbstruck and how everyone in attendance could be laughing at what is going on. Conversely, my Korean friends simply don’t get why I am rolling on the floor holding my ribs and gasping for air while watching things like Raising Arizona, Spinal Tap, and such.

Way back in the day, my Korean friends and I would have endless fun telling each other the funniest jokes we could think of and then laugh at the other person not finding the joke funny.

The difficulties inherent in translating humor cross culturally is one of the reasons I am constantly telling foreign clients not to start their presentations with jokes, not to try to be funny in their discussions, and to steer well clear of anything resembling sarcasm.

But, back to the point…The movie was a good 2-hour escape. Well worth the KRW 6,000. Effect were great, Ron Pearlman played the character amazingly straight, the rest of the cast was wonderful…including my secret girlfriend Selma Blair. I recommend it for people of all ages… There is quite a bit of violence, but the most vulgar word in the movie that I remember was the word “crap.”

Memorable line:

Abe Sapien: In five seconds she planted three eggs inside you.
Hellboy: And she didn’t even buy me a drink.

I haven’t seen any discussion yet about the commentary given by the nbc announcers last night. Apparently, gymnasts in the Men’s P-bars competitions are only allowed 3 hold moves during their routine. If you watch the replay, Yang had 4 holds. This is a .2 deduction that was not applied to his score. I have not researched this too heavily, but if this is correct, Yang should have scored even lower in the p-bars event, even if the .1 point was added for start value(9.712 + .1 - .2 = 9.612). IF the judges could rescore, Yang would still be the bronze medalist with an overall score of 57.674. Besides, rules are rules and each game is governed by it’s particular set of rules.

3rd ranked all-around gymnast in the world!- no, it’s not 1st, but I would be proud of that title any day!!

The key element missing in Korean conceptualization is the capacity for irony.

Koreans are concrete thinkers: “Me hungry, me eat Kimchee, me drink Soju, me vomit, me stare at Foreigner, me inform foreigner Korea has four seasons, ect.

That is why Koreans are completely lost when watching the Simpson’s, yet then start rolling on the floor in hysterics when Homer Simpson gets run over by a car.

But, then Jeff you seem to lack the appreciation for DiaQorea’s constant satire of your own dull concreteness of thought.

He seems to be two levels in abstraction above you —thus, leaving you unamused and clue-less.

Jeff!! silly sally saying nice things is like Paul HAMM or OHNO offering to \’babysit\’ my \’olympic gold metal\’-DONT DO IT!!!

In otherwords jeff dont trust ohno or HAMM to watch your GOLD because they are GOLDSTEALERS!!!

AND simpsons is not funny. Funny is when glamourous movie stars like lee hyo lee or that gay\’girlyboy\’ has to jump up and down and grab a ring inorder to win a prize. usaally they will fall down . BUT DONT WORRY!! because there is usually a charming hansdome Qorean man standing nearby to grab the ring. He will grab the ring!

Western comody is full of high priced comedians and famous people like on simpsons. But QOrean comedy is simple!!! yes its true!! Qorea dont need
high priced things to be happy. THAT IS THE WESTERN WAY!! But not qorean way, because qorea
are more PURE!

you’re so clever, scott.
i guess you’d like details, eh?
responding to:
“And it is true that you would never see the kind of “Be the Red” hysteria in the US. Do you know why? Because it is just sports. Sure, it is fun, but people who really have pride are not so desperate to prove it to themselves by whether or not their team kicks more balls in a net than another. People who truly have pride keep things in perspective. Korea has not reached this level of maturity yet. ”

your comment here was… a bit “off.” koreans were not trying to prove their pride to themselves. they were proud. period. and they were simply showing it. if they truly were “desperate to prove [their pride] to themselves by whether or not their team kicks more balls in a net than another,” they would have been embarrassed when they ultimately did not win the world cup, and they certainly were not. yes, they were disappointed, especially after having played so well in the tournament for their first time, but they still proud of their players, who had played hard.

and… “People who truly have pride keep things in perspective.”?

in this case of the men’s all-around, if americans, or hamm supporters specifically, “truly have pride,” they would be able to see things from the korean “perspective” as well. yes, i agree that it was definitely a great fault on the part of the koreans not to have disputed the scoring earlier if they had the chance. even so, maybe hamm supporters should consider the fact that it is regardless that one should lose a gold medal on a ridiculous error of the judges. true, there are rules against changing published results. but isn’t it logical that faulty rules can and should be changed? the olympic ideals should represent qualities of athleticism and integrity. it is more ridiculous that the better-performing athlete should lose a hard-earned gold due do an admitted error of the judges, than that one would lose an undeserved gold because the opponents failed to dispute the error quickly enough. (don’t get me wrong, i do believe that the koreans should have disputed earlier). and let’s be honest here. regardless of the judges’ error, does it make sense that someone who fell on his butt, rolled off the mat oer to the judges, and was propped up by a judge would win the gold unless everyone else had fallen on their butts at some point in the competition?

people are stating that “it’s just sports, that koreans are overreacting, and that people should stop making such a big deal out of things and get on with their lives. if it is honestly not a big deal, why do americans have to bother defend hamm? why not just give up the gold, if it really doesn’t matter and no one will care in a few days?

now, let me ask you. do YOU understand diakorea’s comments?
thanks for being worried about my embarrasing myself. except, next time, you might consider worrying about yourself a bit more.
you said, “I’m worried that you might be embarrassing yourself by implying that you agree with [diakorea].”
maybe you want to know the meaning of the words you’re using before writing them. so i was “implying” that i was agreeing, eh? i was implying anything, i said it plainly to diakorea “I understand your comments now.” “To understand” means “to sympathize with” (hopefully, you knew that “understand” has more than one meaning…)

http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=understand
if you don’t believe me…
“to interpret in one of a number of possible ways”
“to show a sympathetic or tolerant attitude toward something”
i’ll admit you could use definitions for or against me, but… let’s just consider the context and choose the appropriate meanings here…

i’ll agree, jeff does attract… er, all kinds of people… to this blog

sorry… some corrections to the post above:
“but they were still proud of their players, who had played hard.”

“even so, maybe hamm supporters should consider the fact that it is ridiculous that one should lose a gold medal on an error of the judges.”

“i was not implying anything, i said it plainly to diakorea”

You know …, I read your last post and strangely enough, I didn’t find anything particulary bad about it (in relation to your defense of Korea, anyway).

Then again, my original post was in response to another person, whom I doubt would respond like you did. But anyway, I confess I did miscontrue and over-generalize a tad about the nature of the “Be the Reds” excitement.

When Koreans send death threats and purposely try to sabotage Olympic websites when a judge’s ruling doesn’t go their way, then I think it is fair to say that at least THAT segment of Korean society is in dire need of growing up and getting some perspective. But to extend that to all Koreans who got excited about the World Cup was a little off-target.

As for Diakorea, I think I’ll stand my ground. Stick around for a while and you’ll eventually see what I mean, but since you seem to have your dictionary out anyway, look up “sarcasm.”
