Buddy Holly Curse?

It’s vacation time. I’m going globe-trotting for the next couple of weeks. When I get back, I expect all of you Korean bloggers to have this silly blog block thing solved.

In the meantime, I present the following for your discussion:

Is the a curse surrounding Buddy Holly?

On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly (22 yrs old), Richie Valens (17 yrs old), and the Big Bopper (29 yrs old) died in a plane crash.

On February 3, 1967, Joe Meek, Buddy Holly’s British manager committed suicide

Eddie Cochran was supposed to be on the plane with Buddy Holly. On Easter Sunday 1960, Eddie was killed in a taxi crash. The last song he recorded was with The Crickets (Buddy Holly’s back up group). The Crickets were also in England at the time of the crash.

After Buddy Holly’s death, The Crickets got a new singer, Ronnie Smith, who hung himself. The next signer with The Crickets, David Box, eventually went solo and, in 1964 died in a plane crash at the age of 22, the same age Buddy Holly was when he died in a plane crash.

The Cricket’s next singer, Bobby Fuller was beaten to death in 1966. The last song he recorded before his death was written by Buddy Holly.

Marc Bolan, Guitarist for T-Rex was killed in a car crash in 1977. There was a pen with Buddy Holly’s name on it in the car.

In 1978, The Buddy Holly Story, staring Gary Busey as Buddy Holly hit the theaters. The screen writer committed suicide. Gary Busey bought a guitar owned by Buddy Holly and was shortly thereafter involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident.

On September 6, 1978, Who drummer, Keith Moon, saw Buddy Holly’s movie and stayed overnight at Harry Nilsson house. He overdosed on medication and died the next day, September 7, which is Buddy Holly’s birthday. (As an aside, he died in the same room that Mama Cass died in 4 years previously)

In 1979, Ricky Nelson died in a plan crash. The final song he played was about Buddy Holly. (As an aside, Nelson bought the plane from Jerry Lee Lewis, who sold it because he had a premonition that he would die in a crash on that plane)

On February 3, 1990, the anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death, Del Shannon gave his last performance. He played with The Crickets in the same venue where Buddy Holly gave his last performance. Five days later, Del Shannon shot himself in the head.

On February 3, 2003, the anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death, Phil Spector, Buddy Holly’s US producer, was arrested and charged with the bloody murder of actress Lana Clarkson.

To be continued???

Sorry, Dia,

Your comment crossed several of my arbitrary lines. Clean it up, have something new to say, and try it again.

Jeff,

Buddy Holly’s last venue is the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The Surf is still open and still has dances, etc.

In the field, at the fence line where the plane crashed, there are 4 crosses for Holly, the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and the pilot.

Back in 1980 or so, behind a file cabinet in the Sheriff’s office, an envelope was found containing some of the personal items from the plane crash. Most notable were Buddy’s trade mark black horn rim glasses(Without the lenses). After a brief legal fight, the glasses were returned to Maria Elana, Holly’s widow.

OF the 3 performers, only the Big Bopper hasn’t had a movie made about him.

My father past away the past October. He said was among the crowd in Clear Lake Iowa who where the last to see him perform.

Hmmm…I always thought it was his habit of three eggs and six slices of toast every morning that got him in the end. I never suspected it was Buddy Holly!

I am uncertain what exactly what to write except, I am recently obseesed with Buddy Holley( although he has passed) I watched the movie with Gary Busey. although I am not suicidal, After watching the movie I felt an amazing calmness about life and definately death as well, such as thoughts that have never ocurred before, ‘If I were to die today it would be allright.’ I dont consider myself abnormal and I accidentally ran across this website and a lot of what you haev to say makes sense. But I really don’t believe it is a curse to fall fate after being near something that has touched Buddy Holley, I truly believe this enveloping peaceful feeling is a blessing. I feel so calm lately. I used to worry, feel sick, alone, scared… that is not a curse is it?

take a look at the common denominator here…
Tim Buckley, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Buddy Holly, to name a few…even late comers like lane stanley…Jeff Buckley…

not just the drugs and the lifestyle but…the music….they were all musicians sold to music…

Wow. I could only hope the “curse” isn’t real. If it is, I’m screwed. I live in Cleveland and just visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two days ago. They have some of Buddy’s jackets and his high school diploma. I was not more than a foot away from his coat. Great, now I’m all creeped out.

I really found the things about Buddy Holly and the others interesting, but all the profanity was disgusting and not needed in any way. Can we not have any discussion without this silly unneeded trashy talk. If it is incorporated in the answers, fine, but when it is just there, it is sad, sad, sad,and it seems that maybe someone needs to go back to school to learn a larger vocabulary.

You are incorrect concerning Gary Busey. His motorcycle accident didn’t occur until December 1988, eight years after his role in “The Buddy Holly Story.”
