Signs of the Times

Here are some signs that I saw over the weekend that I found amusing:

This first picture is a bit unclear as it was taken from my motorcycle in the middle of traffic. The sign, which is part of the ubiquitous government slogan/propaganda campaigns, has an interesting date on it. The sign reads: “Water is life…since 1995″

The next picture is even more unclear as it was taken from my motorcycle in the middle of traffic with a digital zoom. It is an advertisment for a matchmaking company that reads: “Please marry a Vietnamese virgin”

The final picture was taken approximately 500 meters from the above picture. The yellow sign announces the existence of a store that sells “adult products”. Simply put, this store sells sex toys. What caught my eye was the small lettering on the sign. One part states that they “buy and sell”…sort of a second hand sex toy shop….ewww. My favorite part of the sign, and the reason I took the picture is the part that says “express delivery.” I guess that there are times you just need something NOW. As a side note, I don’t know if they are related, but the first floor is a battery store….

Funny signs… hands down one of my favorite parts about Korea. I saw stickers all over town similar to your virgin one complete with an “actual couple” photo.

The last building should be able to generate wonderful synergy. It is terrible that I don’t have the command of Korean that you do, I am forced to only enjoy the interesting Kongish, while you get an even better glimpse into the crazy land we live in.

Near where I work in is a swanky Korean men’s club catering to Seoul’s cream of the crop businessmen.

In English the club sign reads:

“HIGH-CRASS CLUB”.

Those are classic! I wonder how long it took someone to open a battery shop so close to the sex shop? Days? Minutes?

I can’t make out the third line of small text clearly (my eyes are getting old — I used to be Eagle Eye GI Joe). But the first line isn’t “We buy and sell”. It’s probably best translated as “Quantity Discounts Available” (or “We sell retail or wholesale”).

Again, eww.

[Editor’s Note: Brendon is Correct. That is an example of mixing business with pleasure. 소 - 도매 is “retail & whole sale”…While blogging in the midst of whipping up a sale and purchase agreement (매도 - 수), my brain got twisted. I will edit it as soon as my frigging server lets me access blogs.com accounts again. -Jeff in Korea
